BSAFE and the AMS Group hosted a successful Learn to Ride weekend

By Chris Ghiorse, BSAFE Director

On the 11th - 12th of December, BSAFE worked with over 30 youngsters teaching them how to ride a bicycle.

This year we had mostly 4 to 6 year old children signed up for the "learn to ride" sessions.  BSAFE only owns one bike small enough for that age group so I had to be careful of how I booked the lessons. Although the area near the cruise ship dock is not ideal for learning, I still got 90% of all the kids "officially riding". Officially riding means: starting, riding and stopping on your own initiative.  By the end of the weekend a parent had made a donation of their son's 16" bike which will enable me to work with more young riders the next time I do a "learn to ride" weekend.

BSAFE also organized a skills session for some students who had multi-speed bikes.  On Sunday, I took 5 young riders through shifting drills and rough zone riding.

I wish I could do more of these weekends. The smiles and laughter coming from a child who has just learned to ride is a great motivator to continue my efforts to bring free cycling safety education to all.

I was able to offer this free weekend because of the AMS Group's desire to be involved with the BSAFE efforts to bring cycling to all age groups.  The Rotaract Club was once again very instrumental in helping me keep organized both days and the immediate past president of the BVI Mountain Bike Club, Sally Blackmore, was a great hands-on assistant for the busy Saturday.

BSAFE only exists because of the generous support of its sponsors: Caribbean Alliance and its agents Caribbean Insurers, the Rotary Club of Tortola, Burke's Garage, Ogier and PricewaterhouseCoopers.  If you or your company would like to find out how to support the BSAFE program or arrange a cycling safety weekend visit www.bsafe.vg or contact Chris Ghiorse at 542-1981 or chris@bsafe.vg
